Overview

– Sponsored by the Initiative for Good Governance (IGG)

The Initiative for Good Governance (IGG), one of the sixteen professional groups under the Great Nigerian Assembly (GNA), extends this powerful commendation to the Federal Government of Nigeria for its bold and visionary step in implementing Local Government Autonomy—a pivotal move that brings governance closer to the people and marks a strategic milestone in Nigeria’s long-awaited restructuring journey.

At the GNA National Seminar held on November 23, 2024, distinguished governance experts, technocrats, and experienced professionals analyzed this policy initiative. The consensus was clear: President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration has taken a courageous and commendable decision that deserves the full support of all well-meaning Nigerians.

The new directive allowing direct fund allocation to Local Government Authorities (LGAs) and granting them executional control over local projects is not just administrative—it is transformative. If properly implemented, this reform will spur accelerated grassroots development, strengthen democratic accountability, and inspire greater civic participation.

However, the success of this initiative rests on several critical pillars:

  1. A Strong Legal Framework to ensure autonomy is not weakened by future interference.
  2. Complete Transparency in the allocation and disbursement of funds to all 774 LGAs.
  3. Robust Monitoring Systems, involving both federal oversight and grassroots citizens.
  4. Empowered Civic Platforms like VoiceItOut for public tracking and project verification.
  5. Community Accountability, where the people monitor and verify development in their localities.

This commendation is proudly sponsored by IGG, which stands firmly in support of this bold restructuring initiative and calls on citizens and professionals alike to rise to the occasion and ensure that local government funds are used judiciously and effectively.
